Preserving exceptional know-how

From April 10 to May 1, 2022, Hermès is taking part in the “Details: Genealogies of Ornament” exhibition as part of Homo Faber, an international event dedicated to craftsmanship organized by the Michelangelo Foundation in Venice, on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Alongside fourteen other houses renowned for their artisanal creations, Hermès is presenting its velours au sabre technique on duchess satin. This unique Lyon silk know-how has been protected and passed on by the Hermès textile workshops in the French city since the early 1990s.

The technique involves creating a velvet pattern on double-warp duchess satin by hand. Using a blade or “sabre”, the artisan delicately cuts the threads in the upper warp  to create a design in velvet and an exceptional fabric. This rare velours au sabre technique enriches the breadth of know-how available to support creativity in all of the house’s métiers, from ready-to-wear to the art of living.
