The Story behind
Samarkand, a city on the Silk Road in modern-day Uzbekistan, has always been a crossroads where East and West meet. This trading post, key for the exchanging of precious materials that originally made up chess sets, lends its name to the Samarcande chess set. Made from precious wood and leather marquetry, the Samarcande chess set represents meticulous attention to detail in the cutting of its materials. When assembled, each square of wood or leather fits together to within a tenth of a millimeter, creating a unique surface.
