The story behind
Inspired by a 17th-century bird's eye view engraving of Paris by the German-Swiss engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian the Elder, Octave Marsal reinvents a joyful capital city. Freely retracing the twists and turns of the River Seine, the city walls and monuments of a dream city, the artist creates a new equestrian city where an imposing mount reigns supreme. On its island, Notre-Dame watches over the city, and saddles, bridles and equestrian trophies play hide and seek in the maze of narrow streets. In a graceful leap, Octave Marsal's horse may one day cross the river, connecting the banks with a bridge between past and present.
