The story behind
The braiding of wide ribbons of Epsom calfskin found in this piece creates a colorful checkerboard pattern on natural cowhide. As the leather strips are very long, supple and have been pared to the greatest extent possible, the weaver needs dexterity and delicacy so as not to warp the shape of the leather. This intricate know-how is inspired by the creations made at the Hermes workshop on the Faubourg Saint-Honoré. The workshop specialized in jockey jerseys and horse rugs and operated from the beginning of the 20th century up to the 1960s. On the principle of heraldry, the study of coats of arms, each stable had its own motif. These motifs were emblazoned on the jerseys worn by jockeys and on the horse rugs, making it possible to identify the stables during races.
